After College , I found myself suddenly without the community I’d grown used to. Houston felt big and isolating, and like a lot of people, I carried that pandemic-era loneliness with me.

The Picnic That Started It All

Then one day, my friend Imhotep flew in from New York and invited me to a picnic. Just a dozen people in the park — strangers sharing snacks and conversation. But something clicked. For a few hours, I felt deeply connected again. I couldn’t shake the thought: What if there was a bigger blanket?

The Idea

I called Imhotep with the idea, and he immediately said, “Haha, thats a great idea.” That was all it took. I ordered twenty-eight oversized gingham blankets on amazon and started thinking of ways to connect them them together. A giant, tennis-court-sized picnic that anyone could be part of.

The Day Everything Changed

Right before that first picnic, I got a call that changed everything. Imhotep had passed away unexpectedly. I pushed the date back and contemplated even doing it at all in his absence. But deep down, I knew he would have wanted me to go through with the idea

My Friends Came Through

With the help of friends — who cooked food, promoted the event, even taught me how to sew — we held the first Big Blanket Super Picnic on Earth Day, April 22, 2023. That first picnic was pretty small — maybe a hundred people gathered on the giant blanket. But even then, you could feel the spark.

The Picnic Has Grown Into Something Special

Since that day, it has grown to an unimaginable scale: thousands of people coming together, DJs and crafts filling the field, a whole city gathering around one shared idea.

A Place Where Meeting New People Is Effortless

That’s when I realized what this really was. It wasn’t just about a big picnic. It was about building a place where meeting new people happens naturally
